Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the Saint Vincent Hospital Radiology Residency Program.  The Department of Radiology at Saint Vincent Hospital (Worcester Medical Center) provides state of the art diagnostic and interventional services in a tertiary care community hospital setting.  Our independent radiology residency training program (currently 12 total residents) has been fully accredited since its inception in 1972.  Additional training programs at Saint Vincent Hospital include:  Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, and Podiatry.  Obstetrics and Gynecology residents rotate from Umass Medical Center.  Surgery and Emergency Medicine residents rotate from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

The current department opened with the new hospital complex in April, 2000.  Equipment includes 3 multi-slice CT scanners, 1.5T MRI unit, 3 gamma cameras, PET/CT, 2 digital angiography suites, digital fluoroscopy, digital mammography, and ultrasound.  The full spectrum of diagnostic, interventional, and therapeutic radiology and nuclear medicine is available.

The cornerstone of the high-tech department is the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).  There is a digital image acquisition, storage, and distribution.  All interpretation is performed on diagnostic workstations with voice recognition dictation.  There is access of images and reports to clinicians via a web server.  Images and reports may be viewed throughout the medical center and off-site via the internet.

The residency program stresses resident education with extensive didactics, active participation in clinical rotations, and hands-on training.  There are no fellows.  There is an average of 32 monthly resident conferences including 8 interdisciplinary conferences.  An in-house physics course is provided.  In addition to rotations at Saint Vincent Hospital, additional experience is provided through:

- 4-week radiology-pathology correlation course at the AFIP (Washington, D.C.)

- 3-month pediatric radiology rotation at Boston Children’s Hospital

- Monthly attendance at the New England Roentgen Ray Society

- Outside elective opportunities are available

Worcester is the second largest city in New England, located approximately one hour west of Boston.  It is ideally situated for easy commuting in and out of the city as well as access to all points of interest in the region.
